And it doesn’t hurt to have a roll of toilet paper around, even if you leave it behind. Consider it a gift for the next people! They’ll thank you for it.
The bathroom can also be one of the most tedious rooms to move, too. (Unless you just swipe everything off the counter into a box.) There’s a mix of stuff that doesn’t really go together. There are fragile items, such as glass canisters that hold cotton swabs. There are messy items, like opened shampoo bottles and wet bars of soap. There are odd-shaped items, like plungers or hair dryers.
During the moving process, it makes sense to group the bathroom items together. But jamming everything into a box could leave everything a soapy mess. So here are a few moving tips when it comes to the bathroom packing process.
Clean, Then Pack
During your last shower, close all shampoo, conditioner, and other opened bottles of liquid in the shower and clean them off. That way they won’t leave a soapy film all over everything else. Grab a plastic bag and place all of those bottles together so they can stand up in a box. If you use bar soap, pack those in a sandwich bag.
Now it’s time to move on to the countertop items. Depending on how vigorously you brush your teeth, you may have flecks on your toothbrush holder, hairdryer, or decorative tissue boxes. Wipe those down and put them into the box. The idea here is to arrive at your new place with nice, clean items. For the first day or two at least.
Group On!
Cans of shaving cream and razors, toothpaste and toothbrush, and combs, brushes, and hair products should be bagged separately. This way you won’t accidentally get toothpaste in a hairbrush or shaving cream on your toothbrush. If a cap works loose and gets all over, it won’t ruin anything.
Put everything not related to your beauty regime in a separate box: cleaning supplies, toilet brush, plunger, shower caddy, and so on. You definitely don’t want any of that coming into contact with a toothbrush or comb. Blech.
Don’t forget the medicine cabinet! For the most part, all of this can go into a single bag, just make sure lids are tight on nail polish remover, cough syrup, and other liquids. Same thing for the drawers. If they share shelf space, they can share bag space. When it’s time to unpack, everything is grouped together for efficiency.
Throw In The Towel
If the bathroom is the last room to be packed, towels have probably been pressed into duty to protect dishes, lamps, and other breakables. If you still have a few available – even if they haven’t been laundered yet – put a couple in the bottom of the box.
That way, if the top of a liquid container does get loose, tips over, and spills all over, it will be absorbed by the towels. Yeah, it’s a bummer if conditioner gets all over the bathroom stuff. But if it seeps through the box and gets all over everything below, that’s an even bigger bummer.
Sorting your bathroom items before packing them away can keep everything neat and tidy during unpacking at your new place. Where the bathroom might have been the last room to pack, make sure you do the reverse when you get home. After all, you never know when you might need it.
