Have you recently found out you need to move quickly? Or perhaps you knew you had to be out of your home soon, but you have just prolonged the inevitable: packing everything up. Moving can be stressful — especially on a short timeline. Here are some tips on how to pack your house in a week safely and efficiently so you can be ready when the moving truck arrives.
#1: Organize
On the first day, organize things as much as possible. Maybe that means writing out a list of your most important to-dos and then tackling a few of those things.
It could mean running errands to pick up moving boxes and other packing material.
Staying as organized as possible during the process will help minimize stress and keep you on task.
#2: Start packing your home
Stay hydrated and well-fed, and then start tackling the packing project. Packing and moving in a week can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. Planning and organization is the key.
It also helps to have friends or family members nearby whom you can enlist for help. Call them! Having some extra hands working alongside you is one of the best ways you can get things packed in time. It can also make the process a lot more fun.
Go room by room and take inventory. Have you packed the kitchen? The living room? Take your time, even though the moving company will arrive as scheduled.
Remember: Moving in a hurry can be done without rushing.
#3: Take time to rest.
You are on a deadline, but that doesn’t mean you need to sacrifice your health and well-being. Take time for regular breathers. Sit and rest for a bit before you head back to the boxes.
There are all kinds of packing tips you can read about between shifts. Packing supplies — bubble wrap, garbage bags, packing paper, packing tape, etc. — for fragile items will help ensure that your moving day goes off without a hitch.
#4: Pack the storage spaces.
Do you have extra closets, a basement, a garage, or other storage spaces that store things that you don’t use all the time? Once the inside of your home is mainly packed, start packing the storage spaces. This one can take a little bit of time, because you may need to purge some of these items as you’re going through them.
As you hit the end of the week, you will likely feel pretty exhausted. But keep in mind that you’re almost done! Take care of the final details — taking apart furniture, cleaning out the fridge, ensuring all utilities are turned off, and more.
