There are lots of blog posts out there that claim to offer moving tips. But we thought we’d expand the concept a little bit and write about those tips as well as hacks. What are some moving tips and hacks? Let’s find out.
The first place to turn for the best and most up-to-date info on moving tips and hacks is your friendly neighborhood (or out of the neighborhood) moving expert. That would be Smooth Move People. We are ready to discuss your move with you, so don’t hesitate to give us a call.
Moving Hack No. 1
If at all possible, schedule your move during off-peak times; you may be able to save some money on your move if you do. For movers, summer is usually the busiest time of the year. That’s because the weather is usually much better, for one. But it’s also because the kids are typically out of school and people are using their vacation times to relocate.
Try to move in the middle of the month, too; fewer people move mid-month, so again you may find agreeable rates in a move in the middle of the month. Of course, you can’t get much more agreeable moving rates than those at Smooth Move People.
Moving Hack No. 2
Relocating for work? Let Uncle Sam know! You may be able to deduct some moving expenses if you’re on the move for a job. Save those receipts, and read our blog post on deducting moving expenses to get the low-down on this potentially sweet opportunity.
Moving Hack No. 3
Save money on bubble wrap (or plastic wrap, paper towels, plastic grocery bags, old newspapers, etc.) by wrapping and packing any delicate or small items in clothing or bed sheets and blankets. Folded socks make for excellent buffers between your fragile items and the outside world, so dump out that sock drawer and put those socks you haven’t worn in 10 years to good use!
Try to limit the number of heavy items in each box so that you have fewer heavy boxes loaded on a moving truck. Moving day is gonna be filled with moving boxes, packing tape, garbage bags, packing supplies, rubber bands, so do what you can to simplify the process.
Moving Hack No. 4
If you can, pack by room, not necessarily by item type. Label your boxes by room or color-code them This is a great help to your movers, and it cuts down on the time you might spend searching for some misplaced item. Always label boxes on the sides, not the tops; that way you can find the right boxes as they’re stacked up against a wall or each other.
Bonus hack: Pack a separate overnight bag, toothbrush, toilet paper, and other bathroom essentials so that you have them handy when you need them. You may not find those items right away, so at least you can feel a little normal while you’re starting to get things unpacked.
